I Respect My Job as an Advertiser

At the time of being admitted as a member of the medical profession:
I solemnly pledge to consecrate my life to the service of humanity;
I will give to my teachers the respect and gratitude that is their due;
I will practice my profession with conscience and dignity;The health of my patient will be my first consideration;
I will respect the secrets that are confided in me, even after the patient has died;
I will maintain by all the means in my power, the honour and the noble traditions of the medical profession;
My colleagues will be my sisters and brothers;I will not permit considerations of age, disease or disability, creed, ethnic origin, gender, nationality, political affiliation, race, sexual orientation, social standing or any other factor to intervene between my duty and my patient;
I will maintain the utmost respect for human life;I will not use my medical knowledge to violate human rights and civil liberties, even under threat;
I make these promises solemnly, freely and upon my honour.

Every doctor in the world would make an oath while receiving his medical degree or diploma. It's touching and makes the job as a doctor more sacred. As a doctor, they are responsible to humanity. Each decisions are holy and great, trying to save patients' lives.
As an advertiser, literally I could not save others' lives, but I also proud of my job. I am convinced of the power of creativity. There are lots of crazy people trying to make the world a better place in a creative way. We make humanity believe moral thoughts, eliminating racial discrimination, promoting gender equality, fighting for disadvantaged social group, calling for environmental conservation..... It's the magic of creativity.

I respect my job, and proud of it.

Final Reflection

1.  Write a list of listening skills that you learned about from each of the units that we studied.  Find them on - page 9, page 35, page 58, page 82, page 107.

a,Identifying main ideas.
Taking notes, consider the title, and separate the main idea, and add some details to support it.
b.Making inferences.
Speakers may give facts, examples or make inferences to state their ideas or opinions.
c.Listening for examples.
Speakers often provide examples for their listeners to understand the key concepts better. Rising intonation works like a comma to let the listener know that the speaker is not finished.
d.Recognizing appositives that explain.
An appositive is a phrase that gives additional information to help the listener understand more about the scientific topics or words.
e.Organizing notes with a T-chart.
After listening,  the most important thing is to organizing what you have heard. Use a T-chart to separate the ideas into two columns can easily show others what’s the speech going.

2.  Which listening skill (mentioned above) did you find the most valuable?  Why?

Organizing notes with a T-chart.

At the beginning, I had no idea about how to take notes. In the past, I always wrote what I heard and I thought it’s important down, in a casual way. When I started to organize the notes, I had to pay lots of attention to read my notes, and kept thinking of what the speaking talked about. It was really time-costing.
I still remembered last time, I went to talk with Professor, I told him the obstacle I faced. He told me I can try to separate location/time, and what had happened. And the next time, I tried to use this way when listening to the slum dog. When I wrote the summary, it’s much more convenient and easy for me to organize. Thanks for providing the method, making me organize in an efficient way.

3.  What are some ways in which your listening in English has improved this semester?

Through listening to lots of different topics speech, I get more ideas about how to take notes, and how to organize my notes as well. What’s more, I am getting familiar with the British accent. I can easily tell which part is important through the listening. Listening to English speech every week is one of my college schedule actually. However, due to too much things to deal with, and the laziness of myself, I didn’t do it before. Through this class, I am forced to listen to English in a serious way. But it is what I really want. Thank you for pushing me!

4.  What are some challenges that you still face in your English listening?  How do you plan to overcome these challenges?

I think my note-taking skill is still need improved. If the speaker speaks too fast, or there was too much noises in the radios, it’s hard for me to capture what the speaker is talking about. And my writing speed is too slow to chase the speaker says. When he/she starts to talk about the next topic, sometimes I am still stay in the last part. It makes me lose some important parts.
As to improvement, I think practice makes perfect. Hope I can listen to Ted everyday in the winter vacation, and try not rely on the subtitles, take notes on my own. After a whole month nonstop practice, I believe my listening will definitely improve!

5.  Based on your experience with listening to many different types of activities in English this semester (listening to radio reports, radio interviews, TED talks, the audio book, a song, etc.), what is the most efficient way that you can train yourself to improve your English listening on your own?  Explain your answer.

To me, I think listening to the audio book is the most efficient way currently. Because I didn’t go abroad before, I am not familiar with what people talk in a casual way. In audio book, the speaking speed is suitable for me, and it’s clear without any noises. For a beginner, it’s an efficient and best way to practice their listening skills. After that, I think TED talks would be nice for me, because I can get more ideas about people’s different accents and intonation through their talks. Speakers in TED talks always have lots of speech experiences, their speech always proceed in a logic way, it’s also a point that I think it is a good method to practice listening skills.

Music Video

Why are you sharing this song?
It's a classical song for christmas. But I like the version Taylor Swift sings the most! Christmas day is my favorite holiday during a year. And now, christmas is coming! I am going to have a christmas party with friends, and I am going to sing this one to everyone! One for celebrating the day, the reason why I share this on my blog is due to the lyrics. When the first time I heard this song, I still can remember clearly that I did not treat it as a happy song, even though the melody sounds jolly. I felt upset, because I had totally same feeling as the lyrics. I listened to it again and again, felt like that she was singing my story. And it did remind me to think of what happened last year. It's a very special song to me!

What is the meaning of the lyrics?
I think it is a girl telling what she thinks in her mind. She had a beloved boy friend last christmas, but they broke up. She gave her full heart to the boy. However, the boy didn't treat her as well as she did, even broke her heart. She was absolutely sad, and felt herself was fooled by the boy. This year, she started to think of this memory, and she got something to tell the boy, that she would not be fooled again! And she might give her heart to someone else, who would cherish it.

GIRAFFE DOCUMENTARY

Why an I sharing this documentray?

I just went to Taipei Zoo this Monday. It has been two years since last time I went  there. Among all the animals, I love giraffe the most. The  leopard print really catches my eyes. It's so beautiful that I would want to take a look of it  as detail as I could. I am interested in the way how giraffes communicate with each other, since last time I didn't see it.

Summary of the documentary:

The documentary introduces giraffes in an interesting way. It introduces the appearances of the giraffes briefly and shows how giraffes' daily life. Also, it shows a little part of how they communicate with each other, which is what I am interested in. But what makes this video the most different and interesting is that that hosts of this video add funny dubs when giraffes interact with other animals. It's funny though, but did not mention that detail info I want to know. I think I should find out more information to get closer to them!

Long TED Talk

Summary:
Tim Brown says the design profession has a bigger role to play than just creating nifty, fashionable little objects. He calls for a shift to local, collaborative, participatory "design thinking" -- starting with the example of 19th-century design thinker Isambard Kingdom Brunel.He introduce three main concept of this system of thinking,that is human-centered,built to think and teamwork.Tim Brown did a design project for a factory when he was young.However,the factory finally closed after he finished his project.After this event,he started to think the meaning of design.He found that the best design product is to solve the problem but not just a product with fashionable looking.Hence,he create a new system of thinking called “design thinking” which can solve many kinds of problems through a simple method. Design thinking teach us a new way to design.For example,it told us to solve a problem by improving “experience” but not to invent a real product.

What can listeners learn from this talk?
When we talk about design,we always think that must someone with technical profession.However,the real designer only focus on how to make his product prettier but not more useful.Tim Brown give us a new idea and chance.He told us that everyone can participate in designing,and even the people like us can not be excluded.And the concept of design thinking really make a difference in the design world.It taught us we should design based on human-centered and build to think. And design thinking even expand the definition of design.It’s main purpose it to solve all kinds of problem but not to just change the appearance.Last,he pointed out that prototype is an important process of design,because it is a way to communicate with users.

Short TED talk

Summary?

He claimed that there is a golden circle including three parts insides out which are why, how and what. Then, he told us a fact that everyone and organization knew what they doand some of them know how they did it. However, few of them knew exactly why they did it. If people know why they did it, they can always be the inspirational and powerful leaders. So, we should learn to think, ask and communicate inside out but not outside in. The stronger reason and motivation we have, the more impossible goal we can reach. Try to make people what you believe and try to reason with them. That is why apple can be successful and how Martin Luther King can influence so many people. Last, he concluded that people will not buy what you do, they buy why you do it.

 What can listeners learn from this talk?

He taught us a simple but powerful method for being an inspirational leadership and told us that we can use the golden circle rule when we communicate with other people. Moreover, if we can use the way inside out , we can really inspire people todo what they should do. So, when we think and ask, we should try not to take premium on just what we want to do. The most important point of view of this method helps us think in different logic, which can make the group working more efficient and smooth. And we can also learn from this influential company, people to have a great impact on the life.
